Most of Amazon’s jobs that have attracted the most media are in the company’s fulfillment centers, its nickname for warehouses. Amazon has approximately 75 of the largest and best fulfillment centers in North America, employing more than 125,000 full-time people.
The tech company uses a variety of attractive and modern buildings for its fulfillment centers and its largest and most convenient size is around 800,000 square feet. Typically, these warehouses provide employment opportunities for about 1,500 full-time people. In some fulfillment centers, Amazon employees work alongside robots that provide great assistance in picking, sorting, and transporting various box sets.
Amazon raised its minimum wage at the end of 2018, bringing the rate to $15 an hour, a very reasonable salary. The new wages cover full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal positions for nearly 350,000 employees who work in warehouses, customer service, and even the newly acquired Whole Foods stores.
Full-time employees at Amazon also receive a generous benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k)-retirement plan, and up to 20 weeks of paid maternity or paternity leave.
That sounds like a sweet deal, right? The pay can be great, and the benefits can be excellent. Still, media reports and accounts of former Amazon employees and many circulating reports say that working at the fulfillment center is very dangerous and scary.
According to the Center for Investigative Reports, the accident rate in Amazon’s warehouses is excessive due to an obsession with machine speed. A report by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health stated that workers at Amazon’s Staten Island, New York, warehouse faced “extremely dangerous working conditions that prioritized line speed over safety.” They consider it a duty.”
